If you live in Cobb County or Paulding County, chances are you’ve got a septic system buried somewhere in your yard—and chances are, you probably haven’t thought much about it lately. That’s okay. Most people don’t… until it’s too late. But after 17+ years in this industry, I’ve learned one thing for sure: neglecting your septic system is the most expensive form of optimism.
At Kaylor’s Septic Servicing, we’ve helped thousands of homeowners all across Northwest Georgia—from Dallas in Paulding County to Marietta in Cobb County—avoid costly disasters by staying ahead of small problems. And since I’ve built this business on trust, I want to share a few things with you today that I personally don’t allow in my own home when it comes to septic care.
Because this isn’t just my job—it’s my family’s name on the truck.
1. Flush Anything Other Than TP and… You Know What
I don’t care what the label says—“flushable” wipes aren’t flushable. Neither are paper towels, feminine products, cotton balls, Q-tips, or that leftover spaghetti your kid dumped in the toilet.
In Cobb County and Paulding County, I see backups all the time from these so-called “harmless” flushes. Would I let my mom flush Clorox wipes down her system in Hiram? Not a chance. Those wipes turn into cement in your pipes.
2. Skip Pumping for 5+ Years
If I had a dollar for every time someone told me “we’ve never had it pumped and it’s been working fine,” I’d retire early. Septic tanks are like oil changes—you don’t wait until the engine seizes.
In fast-growing areas like Acworth, Dallas, and Kennesaw, we meet plenty of new homeowners who don’t even realize their home runs on septic. They’re shocked when I explain the sludge buildup and how one solid backup can cost them thousands.
I get my own tank pumped every 3 years—and I know exactly what I’m doing.
3. Ignore the Riser (Until You’re Digging a Grave in Your Backyard)
If your tank doesn’t have a riser, you’re going to wish it did the moment you need service. A riser is simply an extension that brings the access lid of your septic tank up to ground level—no more digging. Trust me, that makes a huge difference when your yard is frozen or soaked after a storm.
In Powder Springs, Austell, and other parts of Cobb County, older homes often don’t have risers installed. That means every time we come out, we may need to spend extra time locating and uncovering the lid. We don’t charge extra for that labor—but installing a riser makes future maintenance easier, faster, and cleaner. I have one on my own system—and I recommend it to everyone.
